General Climate in Yellowstone Park

Yellowstone Park is unpredictable when it comes to the climate. It can be too hot during the summer season, or it can be truly cold during the winter season. The highest temperature ever recorded was 98°F, compared to 37°C, while the coldest temperature ever recorded was -66°F, compared to -54°C.

Summer

During the summer months, which include months from June to September, the average temperature of a random day is around 70°C to 80°C (0°C to 15°C), but during the night it gets much colder - it may even sometimes be below the freezing temperatures. This makes the temperatures and climate so unpredictable.

However, it's not always hot. There may occur cold spells, or often thunderstorms as well. But, the worst of all are Forest Fires. During the summer season, when it is hotter than normal, there may occur Forest Fires. So far, there have been so many fires, that damaged a pretty big part of forests. The most harmful Forest Fire in Yellowstone Park is though to be the Forest Fires in 1988. A total of 793,880 acres (3,213 km²), or more precisely 36 percent of the park was affected by the wildfires.

Spring and Fall

The temperatures on the spring season and on the fall season are pretty much similar. The temperatures move from 30°F to 60°F (0°C to 15°C), while nights record a temperature from -5°C to -20°C. But, the coldest temperatures of all are during the winter season.

Winter

Winter, similar to the Summer season, has unpredictable temperatures. The temperatures are usually between 0°F to 20°F (-15°C to -30°C). These temperatures don't change that much during the whole winter. However, there may occur cold spells, and temperatures may get even lower.

The winter season, in a similarity with the summer season, offers a variety of activities available. The most famous winter activities are winter sports, such as skiing.

Snow and Rain

Yellowstone Park is not hasn't got a geographical position in which there is always snow and rain, but however, if you plan on visiting Yellowstone Park during the winter or the fall, you must have the right "equipment", such as warm clothes, or umbrellas because rain and snow are right above you!

Tornadoes

There are not many tornadoes in Yellowstone Park, but however, you must be prepared for everything. On July 21, 1987, there was the most powerful tornado recorded in Wyoming. This tornado touched the Teton Wilderness part and hit Yellowstone Park as well. This tornadoe was so powerful, that it ruined a whole surface of 15,000 acres. More precisely, it destroyed 1 to 2 miles wide, and 24 miles long. That makes 1.6 km to 3.2 wide, and 38 km long. This tornado hit with a speed between 207 to 260 mph (333 to 418 km/h). It destroyed both, forests and tourists places, but it didn't take that long to "rebuild" the damaged parts.
