Yellowstone National Park Recreational Activities

Yellowstone has many different activities to offer the visiting families. There is what some call geyser gazing where you go from geyser to geyser in hopes of seeing them erupt. There is also driving through the park and watching the animals in their natural habitats. Camping and hiking are also among the most favorites for families that are looking for adventure on their vacation. It is widely suggested that when visiting the park that you allow three full days to be able to enjoy all aspects of the park.


Hiking is one of the favorites among those who come to the park. There are many different trails for the family to follow through out the park. Storm point trail is a favorite for those who want an excellent view of Yellowstone Lake and a chance to see wildlife large and small. This trail is about a two mile hike through meadows where it is common to see bison that are grazing in the fields. The trail passes through the meadow then to the tree line until you are at storm point that is a cliff that juts out to overlook the lake. The trail will lead to where you can take a different trail on the lake’s shores but this trail can often be closed due to grizzly bear activity. This is just one of the popular trails there are many other that will offer you the opportunity to see the park and wildlife in their natural surroundings.


    There is a list of five that are a must when visiting the park. Here is a list of the top five attractions that are a must see when visiting the park.
  1. One of the most popular things to do is watching Old Faithful come to life every 45 minutes. This is very exciting for young children who have never seen a geyser before.
  2. The second choice for everyone to see is the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. This canyon may not be as big as the one in Arizona but it is certainly breathtaking. At 308 feet high it is one of the most photographed attractions in the park. There is a hike that you can take to the lip of the fall that gives a breathtaking view for all to see.
  3. The third on the list is going to be Hayden Valley. It will give you one of the best views to see the wildlife. This is where the bison, very large elk, and moose often like to graze. You will likely see many different kinds of birds in the Yellowstone River that runs along the side of the valley.
  4. The fourth is going to be mammoth hot springs. This is one of the spots where some the oldest buildings are located in the park. These buildings are from when the army had it headquarters when they were managing the park.
  5. The fifth on the list is the largest high altitude lake. Yellowstone Lake is one of the popular sights because of the view. On the east and north side of the lake you can often see snow capped mountains.
